This is a very simple way to install a Ford T-18 or NP435 tranny to any AMC V-8 or 6 cylinder with out spending a large amount of money on aftermarket adaptors. The Ford T-18 and NP435 transmission have the same bolt pattern as the Jeep T-150 transmission. The T-150 transmission can be found in the 1976 to 1979 Jeep CJ-5 and CJ-7. This was the standard 3-speed manual used with the Dana 20 transfer case.

Once you have located the T-150 bell housing for your project make sure it is in good shape. The Ford transmission will bolt directly up with the same bolts used on the Jeep T-150. The next part of this installation will be the clutch. The Jeep T-18 transmission clutch disk is the same as the Ford T-18 or NP435. Install the new clutch disk and pressure plate to your flywheel. Make sure to check your flywheel to ensure it does not need to resurfaced.

Now is when you will need to buy one more part that is not stock Jeep. The Ford T-18 and NP435 input shaft is 1” shorter than the Jeep T-15 transmission. This will keep the input shaft from engaging the pilot bushing that would normally be used on the Jeep application. You will need purchase a pilot bushing for a Ford 360 or 390 V-8 engine. This pilot bushing is much larger than the Jeep. The bushing is so large that it will not fit in the end of the Jeep crankshaft with out some modification. The Ford 360/390 pilot bush will need to be turned down to fit into the machined area of the Jeep crankshaft that would accept the nub on a automatic transmission torque converter. You will see the area that I am talking about when you have the clutch removed from the flywheel. You can now spend the money to have this turned down by a machine shop, or you can do what I have done in the past. Find a wood doll rod that same size as the hole in the center of the pilot bushing. I then took the pilot bushing to the grinder and allowed the bushing to turn in my hand as it removed a small amount of material from the outside of the pilot bushing. By allowing it to turn freely in your hands it will removed an even amount of material to allow the pilot bushing to installed into the rear of the crank shaft. Don’t remove too much, or you will have to start over. You have a snug fit, but so tight that you deform the pilot bushing when driving it into the crankshaft.

Now it is time to install your new transmission into your Jeep. The advantages of have that T-18 Ford transmission with the 6.32 gear when in first or the super low 6.69 first gear of the NP435. Now before you can enjoy the low gears of the your new tranny, you will still have to figure out how to install the transfer case. This is the area that you will have to us an aftermarket adaptor to put your transfer case onto your Ford transmission.

By not having to use a high dollar adaptor to install the transmission to the engine, you can save your money for the transfer case. When only buying one adaptor, you will have money for other upgrades.
